THE V&A HUMIDIFIES ART COLLECTION
London’s Victoria and Albert Museum has installed a Vapac humidification system to protect its world famous decorative art collections.
The V&A is a magnificent grade 1 listed building. It holds one of the world’s largest and most wide-ranging collections of the decorative arts, and was established to allow the collections to inspire manufacturers and designers. Museums around the world are modelled on the V&A, which enjoys a reputation as a world-wide centre of excellence.

The Museum occupies an 11-acre site and has 146 galleries reflecting centuries of achievement in fields as varied as ceramics, jewellery, textiles and dress, from Britain, Europe and Asia. It also contains the national collections of furniture, sculpture, glass, ceramics, water-colours, portrait miniatures and the art of photography, as well as the National Art Library.

The Collections constitute a unique international resource; some four million objects are held by the Museum, ranging from Constable paintings to Vivienne Westwood shoes, and includes the finest collection of Italian Renaissance sculpture outside Italy as well as the most impressive collection of Indian art and artefacts outside the subcontinent.

It is therefore essential that the collections are displayed and stored in the correct environments to protect them for future generations.

The structure of the building and the presence of over one million visitors passing through the galleries each year dramatically affects humidity levels. The accumulated body heat of visitors, and high ceilings combined with seasonal temperatures requires careful monitoring.

In selecting a system, flexibility and responsiveness were key criteria. Variable water was also a major consideration.

The Microvap WL range of humidification units was selected because of its ability to cope with changes in water quality. The range is widely used where the contents of the water supply cannot be guaranteed. Trace elements in water can vary daily from area to area. Even small variations can significantly affect the performance of an humidifier.

Vapac has addressed this problem with its patented VOS-6 operating system. The software enables the WL to automatically adapt to changes in water. And by incorporating a combination of boil-down and switch-off to control output, the WL unlike other humidifiers, minimises wastage of water and energy, whilst ensuring a full response.

Installing the system not only enables the V&A to display a wide range of objects, but also to ensure that its visitors can enjoy the displays in a comfortable and controlled environment.
